Well, we are where we are. Both Oxford and Cambridge - like demented twins from 'A Game of Thrones' - have descended into madness. College balls were always a load of bollocks, to a miserabilist like me. I went to one and was bored stiff. Still, it's beyond depressing to imagine attending now.
Every day it seems, I get begging letters from Jesus College. The latest is truly bizarre. Our buffoon of a Principal, grandstanding about the bequest he's made in his will and urging old members to do the same - then die, asap. All so that more Chinese students can use the absurd 'digital hub' built onto our hideous Fourth Quad (itself like an airport terminal). It stands on Cornmarket, visibly empty and a monument to the vacuity of managerialism.
I'm attending a Gaudy next month and will seek this grifting wretch out.
What is the purpose of such universities now? To brainwash, or to train the next lot of programmers to build the world digital brain?
Institutions of "higher learning" should only concern themselves with the search for fundamental truth. Anything else they're involved in is taking them off their path. Sounds like they're REALLY off their path now.
