This election might as well be a talent show, or some celebrity panto of escaping a tropical island. Whilst politics always has those elements, there’s now nothing else. One could perhaps reflect: that's the situation. But this vacuum will be filled.
Personally, the complete disillusionment with our meaningless 'politics' makes me proud. People's disdain is entirely justified. Events are now taking over - especially the oncoming global conflict. All of the symptomatic and deeply disturbing effects are gathering pace. My take is that this is an 'end of empire' situation. Throughout history, these always produces cultural meltdown, worship of strange cults, devastating political and establishment corruption, mass migrations - and then war. We're already irrevocably in a civil 'culture' war. But notice how we're mired in permanent international 'hot' ones - and have been for decades.
Internally, it's a war with reality, with increasing censorship and persecution (see Covid, the anthropogenic global-warming scam, trans-madness) of those who dare to see through the performance. Externally, the USA is collapsing and other powers are stepping up.
I guess behind it all is the victory of managerialism, corporatism, consumerism, identity politics - the only religions remaining, besides the Islamic death-cult. Humans reduced to spreadsheet cells in the first four, or piles of bodies in the fifth. All abetted by the technology I'm using.
The big question is how the hideous new Chinese superpower (and its lacky Russia) will manage all this. My guess is via an uneasy carve up with the USA and the increasingly authoritarian EU. But only if we first survive the war between them.
Of course, to many this will seem portentous nonsense!
I recall things like Bladerunner; Matrix; Time Machine; Logan’s run . See y’all on the other side…….
'End of empire' is absolutely the perfect way to put it. Interestingly, one of the things the fall of Rome witnessed was the veneration of celebrity chefs.
